The Royal History of Pizza Margherita: A Slice Fit for a Queen

Pizza is a universal love language, but did you know that one of the world’s most famous pizzas has royal roots? That’s right—our beloved Pizza Margherita was created to impress a queen!

Picture this: It’s the late 19th century in Naples, Italy, a city known for its lively streets, fresh seafood, and, of course, pizza. At the time, pizza was street food for the working class, loved for its simplicity and flavor.

Then came Queen Margherita of Savoy, visiting Naples with King Umberto I. Curious about the local favorite, she summoned Raffaele Esposito, a renowned Neapolitan pizzaiolo, to prepare some pizzas for her.

Esposito crafted three different pizzas, but the queen fell in love with one in particular. It had just three simple ingredients:

Tomatoes – representing the red in the Italian flag
Mozzarella – for the white
Fresh basil – for the green

Honoring her love for the dish, Esposito named it Pizza Margherita, and the rest is history!

A Tradition That Lives On

Today, the spirit of this legendary pizza still thrives. Authentic Neapolitan pizza-making is even protected by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage! True Pizza Margherita is made with:

San Marzano tomatoes – grown in volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius
Fresh mozzarella di bufala – creamy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness
Hand-stretched dough – no rolling pins allowed!
A wood-fired oven – baking the pizza at 900°F in just 60–90 seconds

Every bite of our Margherita pizza is a nod to Naples’ rich history and the queen who made it famous.
